China Arts Carnival Club Double Awards for Notting Hill Carnival 2009

After 4 years of successful presentations, China Arts Carnival Club won a £5,000 grant to perform at London’s famous and spectacular Notting Hill Carnival in 2009.

In 2008, we were invited to front the whole Carnival procession under the theme of the Olympics, with a group of more than 60 performers. The theme of this year’s parade is “A Bridge of Magpies”. It is specially designed for the year 2009 to coincide with the Chinese year of the Ox. The pageant enacted the meeting of two heavenly stars, Altair and Vega: the Chinese legend of the Cowherd and the Weaving Maid (celebrated at the Double Seven Festival – seventh day of the seventh moon) for the 2009 Notting Hill Carnival.

This year’s procession featured new perspectives compared with our previous presentations that combined stilt walking and street dancing, was and accompanied by a live wind-and-percussion band.?

Arts Council of England Grant

We are grateful to be awarded a grant by Arts Council England, which enabled us to make specially designed costumes and props, and supported our other artistic expenditure. The grant has contributed to China Arts Carnival Club’s development, as we were previously lack of funding to design and create costumes to properly match the theme of our parades. We would like to thank Arts Council England for their kind support that made our carnival project progress one step further.

3rd Prize for Best Traditional Bands

China Arts is proud to have won 3rd Prize for Best Traditional Band 2009, awarded by London Notting Hill Carnival Mas Bands Association. It is the first time a Chinese carnival group has ever won a prize at London and Europe’s most significant carnival of Afro-Caribbean culture. It is significant for China Arts Carnival Club as we are building our profile and representing British Chinese at the London’s major multi-ethnic and multi-cultural events. Moreover, our presentation and effort in promoting a positive image of, and artistic creativity by British Chinese is recognised and rewarded.

China Arts featured in London Notting Hill Carnival 2006 – A rare appearance of Chinese Arts in 42 years

On the 28 th August 2006, China Arts successfully presented a Chinese fan dance team with female student performers wearing beautiful traditional qipao (embroidered silk gowns) and parading the streets around Notting Hill. Their fresh appearance and elegant manner was unusually well received with much applause along the entire route of the Carnival. Early this year, China Arts was invited to organise a performance team to represent the Chinese community, reflecting the multicultural spirit in Britain at this Europe's biggest and most spectacular street festival. China Arts will build on this initiative to develop a more artistic and substantial carnival troupe next year.
This year is the first time that Chinese people have joined in this grand celebration in Britain's multicultural capital since its inception 42 year ago. The event attracted over a million people and worldwide media coverage, and was a great success. We have written a new page in the history of the London Notting Hill Carnival:
